Abstract

PURPOSE: To decrease the occupied area of the overflow drain without lowering the picture quality by providing the overflow drain with every unit color cycle to the pickup element which delivers two color signals in the dot sequential system.
CONSTITUTION: Picture elements 1R, 1B and 1G are formed via channel stopper 2 to charge transfer type pickup element 10 and in correspondence to the vertical stripe-type color filter, and overflow drain 3 is formed based on element 1R and in unit color cycle 3τp. But no overflow drain is formed in stopper 2 within unit color cycle 3τp, and lateral width W of stopper 2 is reduced less than half in comparison with the conventional width. In such constitution, the extra charge is made to flow into adjacent overflow drain 3 while filling the wells of adjacent elements 1R and 1G in case element 1B has overflow. Thus the occupied area can be reduced for the overflow drain.
