Abstract
PURPOSE: To make it possible to meter the heat flow without any disturbance, now matter where a heat flow metering element of planar shape is placed, by effecting the endothermic operation at the higher temperature surface in the heat flow and the exothermic operation at the lower temperature surface.
CONSTITUTION: A thermoelectric substance having the Peltier effect is jointed between thermal conductors, e.g., endothermic and exothermic plates of metal, thus preparing the heat flow metering element. As the thermoelectric substance, such a heat conductive semiconductor is preferred as has a high Seebeck coefficient and low thermal conductivity and specific resistance. Practically, P-type and N-type thermoelectric semiconductors are combined to determine the shape of the elements in a manner to satisfy Equation (wherein: αp and αn stand for the Seebeck coefficients of the P- and N-type semiconductors; Sp stands for the junction area between the P-type semiconductor and the exothermic plate; and Sn stands for the junction area between the N-type semiconductor and the endothermic plate). Upon measurements, the element is placed in the heat flow and is supplied with an electric current to read out the current value when the temperatures at the both sides of the element become equal.
