Abstract

PURPOSE: To remove effectively sulfur-containing compounds by contacting gas containing H2S, COS or mercaptan with activated carbon on which a specified amount of alkali metal borate, silicate or carbonate is supported.
CONSTITUTION: Alkali metal borate (for example NaBO2), silicate (for example Na2SiO3 or carbonate (for example Na2CO3) is supported on activated carbon having a surface area in the range of about 200W2000m2/g in an amount of 0.1W 10mg atoms preferably 1W5mg atoms of alkali metal per 1g of activated carbon. Gas containing H2S, COS or mercaptan is contacted with the activated carbon on which alkali metal borate, silicate or carbonate is supported, at a temperature of about 0°CW250°C, preferably 5W150°C and with a contact time of 1/10W20 seconds, preferably 1/5W50 seconds.
