Abstract

PURPOSE:To make assembling and working easy and reduce liquid leakage by disposing a plurality of unit electrolytic cells segmented to cathode and anode chambers with cation exchange membranes in the vertical direction, letting the outer walls of the unit electrolytic cells be the side walls continuous to the vertical direction adjoining unit electrolytic cells and further letting the upper and lower walls between the electrolytic cells be common walls. CONSTITUTION:The respective unit electrolytic cells U which are segmented to anode and cathode chambers A and B by cation exchange membranes M are so disposed as to be stacked in the vertical direction. The outer walls 1, 1' of the unit electrolytic cells are the side walls continuous to the outer walls of the unit electrolytic cells adjoining in the vertical direction, respectively. Because of this, the outer wall is made as one sheet of plate down to the lowest one. The upper or lower walls 2 or 2' between the electrolytic cells are commonly used with those of the unit electrolytic cells adjoining in the vertical direction, respectivily. At the time of electrolysis, water or dilute NaOH solution is supplied through the inlet 5 of the uppermost cell while current is being supplied to electrodes 3 by way of feed bars 4 and the catholyte thus formed goes through outlet 6 into a gas-liquid separator 7, where it is separated of H2 and is supplied as the catholyte of the lower adjoining electrolytic cell through pipe 8.
