Abstract

PURPOSE: To make the measurements stable and accurate for a long time by using a solution of KNO3 as an electrolyte in a chemical oxygen demand meter for measuring the potential between two liquids while gradually feeding the electrolyte through a liquid communication portion of a slat bridge to a portion to be measured.
CONSTITUTION: A reservoir tank 3, which reserves electrolyte and into which a silver-silver halide electrode 1 is dipped, and a reaction container 4, which reserves a liquid to be measured and into which a platinum electrode 2 is dipped, are made to have communication through a salt bridge 5, which has its lower end portion equipped with a liquid communicating portion 6, thus constituting a chemical oxygen demand (COD) meter. As the aforementioned electrolyte, the conventional solution of KCl is replaced by the solution of KNO3. Since the liquid communicating portion 6 is made by embedding pin hole or poroud ceramics, clogging is liable to take place. By using the solution of KNO3 as the electrolyte, no clogging takes place for a period longer than three monthes so that the stable measurements can be accomplished.
