Abstract

PURPOSE:To granulate zirconium oxide hydrate to spherical particles having a mechanical strength high enough to use as ion exchanger. CONSTITUTION:The pH of an aqueous solution containing at least one selected from titanium(IV) salts and tin (IV) salts and a zirconium salt in a proportion of the former salt/the latter salt ratio(in term of metal and in mole) of 0.5 or more is regulated to 1 to 3, and then the mixed sol thus obtained is formed into spherical hydrogel in a hot medium, matured, washed with water, and dried. The zirconium (IV) salts used include zirconium oxychloride (ZrOCl2. 8H2O), zirconium chloride (ZrCl4), etc., titanium (IV) salts used include titanium fluoride (TiF4), titanium chloride (TiCl4), etc., and tin (IV) salts used include tin fluoride (SnF4), tin chloride (SnCl4), etc.
