Abstract

PURPOSE: A sheet molding compound prepared by reinforcing a resin containing colorants and inorganic filler with fiberglass is formed by compnessing with heat to give moldings with patterns of thick and thin lines of translucent white color on the back of resin color.
CONSTITUTION: To (a) 100 parts by wt of an unsaturated polyester resin that is chemically thickened with magnesium oxide or so, are added (b) 50W200 parts of an inorganic filler of 1.5W1.6 reflactive index as hydrated alumina or glass powder and (c) a transparent colorant of oil-soluble azo dye that is soluble in monomers of the unsaturated polyster resin to form a compound. The compound is casted into a sheet and fiberglass is cut and scattered on the sheet, then the fiberglass is covered with the compound. The resulting sheet is covered with polyethylene films on both surfaces and rolled to give said sheet molding compound. After the polyethylene films on both sides are removed, the compound is formed by compressing with heat to form moldings with pattern.
