Abstract

PURPOSE:The reaction of a specific isoxazole derivative with phosgen gives and isoxazolone derivative that it useful as a synthetic intermediate of plant growth regulator. CONSTITUTION:The reaction between an isoxazole derivative of formula I (X is H, halogen, lower alkyl; Y is H, lower alkyl) and phosgen is conducted in an inert solvent as benzene or toluene at room temperature to the refluxing temperature of the solvent to give the isoxazolone derivative of formula II. The product gives a compound of formula III (R1 is lower alkyl; R2 is phenyl or benzyl which may be substituted) that is a plant growth regulator, when it reacts with a corresponding secondary amine or its salt in the presence of a base.
