Abstract
PURPOSE: To obtain an acrylic resin having improved transparency and impact resistance by polymerizing an acrylic ester and a refractive index adjusting polymerizable monomer impregnated into a copolymer consisting mainly of methyl methacrylate.
CONSTITUTION: A mixture of 50W100 wt.% of methyl methacrylate, and 0W30 wt.% of an alkyl acrylate and/or 0W30 wt.% of a copolymerizable vinyl monomer, e.g. styrene, is subjected to suspension polymerization in the presence of a radical polymerization initiator, e.g. an organic peroxide, to give copolymer particles. A mixture of 57W98.9 wt. % of an acrylic ester, 0W10 wt.% of an alkyl methacrylate, 0.1W3 wt.% of a crosslinkable monomer, e.g. diallyl phthalate, and 1W30 wt.% of a monomer, e.g. styrene, for adjusting the refractive index of the product polymer, is impregnated into the particles and polymerized to form the desired acrylic resin.
