Abstract
PURPOSE: To exactly start lighting a metallic vapor discharge lamp with lower starting voltage by mixing one or more of N2, O2, NO, N2O, CO, and CO2 with Penning (discharge) gas containing Ne, Ar, etc. to thereby lower the glow arc transfer voltage at discharging time.
CONSTITUTION: One or more of N2, O2, NO, N2O, CO and CO2 are mixed with Penning gas containing one or more of Ar, Kr and Xe, and Ne. The preferable mixing amount is less than 500ppm. A discharge tube is produced by providing end caps 2, 3 sealing niobium tubes 4, 5, respectively for holding tungsten coil electrodes 6, 7 coated with thoria at the ends, at both ends of a light emitting tube 1 composed of, for example, a quartz tube, and sealing starting gas including Ne, 1% of Ar and 0.05% of N2, a mixture of NaI, TlI3 and InI3, and Hg in the tube 1. Since energy loss in a positive column is thus reduced to increase energy concentrated at the electrodes, it lowers glow arc transfer voltage to thereby lower the starting voltage of the discharge lamp.
