Abstract

PURPOSE: To prepare high purity adipic acid useful for the synthesis of nylon, etc., economically, by washing crude adipic acid obtained from acidic waste water produced by the liquid-phase oxidation of cyclohexane, with LB-oil, etc, which are by-products of said liquid-phase oxidation process.
CONSTITUTION: An acidic waste water (containing 5W20% of adipic acid) produced from the process for the production of cyclohexane and cyclohexanol by the liquid-phase oxidation of cyclohexane, is treated to obtain a crude adipic acid, which is washed with LB oil (a low-boiling by-product obtained by the distillation of the above oxidized product to separate the objective compound), cyclohexanone and/or cyclohexanol. High purity adipic acid is obtained from the crude adipic acid prepared above, by nitric acid oxidation, washing with water, treatment with activated charcoal, and recrystallization. The washing is carried out pref. using a multi-stage washing column. The used washing liquid is recycled to a proper stage in the liquid-phase oxidation process.
