Abstract

PURPOSE:To provide water-containing cosmetic containing propylene carbonate as a low-toxic, low-irritant agent for preventing contamination with microorganisms such as fungi, yeasts, and bacteria over a wide pH range. CONSTITUTION:Water-containing cosmetics, pref. an emulsion-type cosmetic selected from milky lotion, cream, foundation, eye shadow, and cheek rouge, or a nonemulsion-type cosmetic selected from beauty wash, and shampoo, are compounded with propylene carbonate as an agent for preventing contamination with microorganisms. The amount of propylene carbonate is pref. >=2wt% based on the water in the water-containing cosmetics. Propylene carbonate is low-toxic and low-irritant to the skin, soluble in water, and inhibits the contamination with fungi, yeasts, and bacteria. The solubility in water is kept constant independent of the pH of the solution. Accordingly, propylene carbonate is suitable as an additive to water- containing cosmetics for controlling the contamination of the skin with microorganisms.
