Abstract

PURPOSE: To treat an ordinary waste material sludge simply by providing a methane fermentation apparatus having a gravel layer, a gas collecting membrane above the gravel layer and a soil layer covering the gas collecting membrane to prevent scum formation without carring out mechanical stirring.
CONSTITUTION: A methane fermentation apparatus is constituted from a methane fermentation tank 2 receiving a general waste material sludge 3 and carrying out methane fermentation under a water filled condition, a gravel layer 8 of which a part thereof is immersed in a sewage layer provided within the methane fermentation tank 2, a gas collecting membrane 5 forming a gas collecting space 14 provided above the gravel layer 8 and a soll layer 6 covering the gas collecting membrane 5. The methane fermentation tank body 2 has, e.g. a vertical shape with a deep bottom of which a lower half is embedded in the underground, but may have a horizontal shape with a shallow bottom. A thickness of a soil layer 6 covering the gas collecting membrane 5 is pref. 20W50cm and, even if a minute amount of methane gas is discharged from a gap 13, said methane gas is decomposed by microorganism in the soil layer 6 into harmless H2O or CO2.
