Abstract

PURPOSE: To obtain a copolymer useful for a paint which excels in drying characteristics and film properties after curing, by a method wherein an acrylic monomer and a hydroxyl gp.-contg. acrylic monomer are polymerized in the presence of a free- radical polymn. initiator and a mixt. of chain transfer agents.
CONSTITUTION: A monomer mixt. consisting of (A) 5W50wt% of a hydroxy gp.- contg. acrylic monomer of formula I (wherein R1 is H, CH3; R2 is aliph. gp. having 1W8 carbon atoms), (B) 10W95wt% of an acrylic monomer of formula II (wherein R1 is H, CH3; R3 is H or -COOR4 provided that R1 is H, when R3 is -COOR4; R4 is aliph. gp. or alicyclic gp. having 1W15 carbon atoms) and (C) 0W 85wt% of a monomer copolymerizable with (A) and (B), is polymerized at a temp. 50W 150°C in the presence of a free-radical polymn. initiator and also in the presence of 2W 30wt% based on the combined weight of monomer mixt. of a mixt. composed of at least two chain transfer agents selected from a hydroxyl gp.-contg. chain transfer agent of formula III (wherein X is -SH, halogen; R5 is 1W8C hydrocarbon gp.) and a carboxyl gp.-contg. chain transfer agents of formula IV (wherein X is -SH, halogen; n is 1W3; R5 is 1W8C hydrocarbon gp. provided that n is 1 when X is -SH).
