NEW MATERIAL:A liquid branched-chain saturated higher aliphatic polyol of formula I [A is formula II (D is H or OH; provided that two or more D's are not OH at the same time); E, E' are H or OH provided that E is not equal to E'; F, F' are H or OH provided that F is not equal to F'; n is 0 or 1].
EXAMPLE: 2,8-Dimethyl-1,4,9-undecanetriol.
USE: Food additive. Effective to control various microorganisms, and harmless to the living body.
PROCESS: The compound I is prepared by hydroxylating an alternating tetramer of an α-olefin and butadiene of formula III [when n=0, B is CH2=CH-CH2-, CH3- CH=CH-, or CH3-(CH2)2-; and when n-1, B is CH2=CH-(CH2)2-, CH3-CH=CH- CH2-, CH3-CH2-CH=CH-, or CH3-(CH2)3-].
