Abstract

PURPOSE: To enable the discrimination of the growth and active state of living things at the treatment of waste water, the fermentation by microbes and the production of microbes by detecting the reflected waves, scattered waves or transmitted waves from aquatic living things while imparting electric fields, magnetic fields or electromagnetic fields or stimuli such as various shocks to the water to be treated.
CONSTITUTION: The water 2 to be treated being supplied into a pipe 1 is radiated by the laser from a radiator 3 and the radiated light falls onto the microbes in the water and makes reflection, scattering and transmission. The reflected, scattered and transmitted rays are gathered in a detector 4 and a detected as electric signals which are then discriminated by a discriminator 5. When the optical axis is shut off by a chopper 6, the diffracted portion is detected by the detector 4 and when the chopper 6 is isolated, the transmitted light is detected as well. These signals are combined and discrimination is done. On the other hand, electric fields are acted to give stimuli by applying voltage between the electrodes 7 from a high frequency electric power source 8, and therefore the living microbes and activated sludge begin to move and those which are dead do not move. Hence, the transmitted light and scattered light detected in the detector 4 make an increasing or decreasing change with the movement of the microbes, from which the active state may be discriminated as well.
