Abstract

PURPOSE: To accurately detect an upper dead center of a piston in an engine of any construction by providing a connecting member which can be connected to a bore communicated with a combustion chamber, and a pressure detecting pipe connected to the connecting member and adapted to detect the pressure in the combustion chamber.
CONSTITUTION: A connecting member 7 is screwed to a plug bore 6 formed in a cylinder 2, and a pressure detecting pipe 13 is fitted at its one end portion around a lower end surface 11 of the member 7. When a piston 3 is upwardly moved, the air pressure in a combustion chamber 4 is increased and a surface of a lubricating oil 14 on the distant side with respect to the member 7 raised. When the piston 3 is downwardly moved, the pressure in the combustion chamber 4 is decreased so that the oil level on the side of the member 7 is raised with the oil level on the distant side with respect thereto lowered. Therefore, when the piston 3 exceeds an upper dead center, movement of the surfaces of the lubricating oil 14 are stopped accordingly to be then moved in the opposite direction. Thus, an upper dead center of the piston in an engine of any construction in the levels of the lubricating oil 14 in the detecting pipe 13. Therefore, an upper dead center of a piston in an engine of any construction can be accurately detected with the detecting operation not influenced by the arrangement of a plug 6 and the shape of the upper surface of a piston 3.
