Abstract

PURPOSE: To obtain carbon black graft polymer in high yield, by a method wherein carbon black is mixed with a vinyl monomer, the mixt. is heated at a temp. of not lower than a temp. at which polymn. is initiated, and the mixt. is irradiated with ionizing radiation.
CONSTITUTION: A mixt. of carbon black and a vinyl monomer is heated at a temp. of not lower than a temp. at which polymn. is initiated. Then the mixt. is irradiated with ionizing radiation of 1W100 mega rads. A reaction mechanism for the enhancement of yields of carbon black graft polymer by the irradiation of the ionizing radiation is presumed that active gp. are produced in a homopolymer, the active gp. of the homopolymer are combined with the surface of carbon black or are recombined with active gp. of a polymer, said active gp. being chemically bonded to the surface of the carbon black, thereby increasing the yield of carbon black graft polymer.
