Abstract

PURPOSE: To improve a cation-exchange membrane to enable electrolysis of NaCl at high current efficiency, by a method wherein 1,2-di-substd. olefin or cyclic olefin is added to a fluorine-contg. high-polymer membrane having a specified gp and then carboxyl gp. is introduced into the resulting adduct.
CONSTITUTION: In a process for the modification of a high-polymer membrane comprising adding (B) an olefin to (A) a fluorine-contg. high-polymer membrane having a radical of formula -CF2X (wherein X is SO2 Cl, Br, I) and then introducing carboxyl gp. into the resulting adduct, (a) 1,2-di-substd. olefin or (b) cyclic olefin as (B) component is used to obtain an electrolytic membrane for NaCl. Preferable substituents of (a) or (b) are those having fluorine-contg. alkyl and -CO-, -CONH-or-SO2O-. Cpd of (a) having gp. of formula I (wherein Rf is 1W15C fluorine-contg. alkyl) are preferred. Cpd of (b) having gp. of formula II (wherein R1 R2 are gp. of formula I) or III (wherein Rf, Rf' are 1W15C fluorine-contg. alkyl) are preferred.
