Abstract

PURPOSE:To impart excellent strength to a catalyst carrier having a honeycomb structure when installed in a catalytic converter case of an internal combustion engine for an automobile, by providing a ring-shaped plate on at least one end face of the catalyst carrier of the honeycomb structure. CONSTITUTION:Cordierite is ground into powder whose mean diameter is 8 microns and then milled with a catalytically-hardened polyurethane resin in the amount of 50% of the weight of said cordierite powder. The thus-milled mixture is molded into a honeycomb structure 1 in accordance with a conventional method. Then, two ring-shaped plates 5 of 50mm in outer diameter, 40mm in inner diameter and 3mm in thickness are formed with the above-described mixture. The plates 5 are respectively bonded to both end faces of the honeycomb structure 1 by means of a paste which has been prepared by diluting the above-mentioned mixture with acetone. After drying the bonded structure, it was baked. The thus-obtained honeycomb is installed in an exhaust pipe 4 of an internal combustion engine, whose overall cylinder volume is 360cc, by a flange 3 through a cushioning member 2 of an L-shaped cross-section. After 100 hours of driving, the honeycomb was subjected to an inspection but no abnormality was observed. Without the ring- shaped plates, the end faces of the honeycomb developped concaves of 2-3mm deep where said end faces contact their respective flanges.
