Abstract

PURPOSE: To make it possible to sufficiently supply oxygen even into an interior of a sludge layer, by a method wherein the sludge containing nitrating bacteria is supported to a hollow fiber membrane and oxygen is introduced into said membrane.
CONSTITUTION: A hollow fiber membrane of which an outer diameter is 0.01W 3mm, a pore diameter of a membrane wall is below 0.5μm and gas permeability is 100,000W300,00l/m2/hr./atm. (in a dry state) is used as a support for a sludge containing nitrating bacteria and, by introducing oxygen, oxygen and carbon dioxide gas, or a gas containing both gases into this hollow fiber membrane, said gas is supplied to a sludge layer formed on an external surface thereof through a membrane wall of said hollow fiber membrane. More particularly, a number of above- described hollow fiber membranes are bundled and bent, and a gas pipe is connected to an open end thereof to supply the gas.
