Abstract

PURPOSE: To prepare the title compound for use as a raw material of vitamin E, K, etc., by reacting a raw phytol obtained from an unsaponifiable material of a plant and alga with a dibasic acid anhydride to give a hemiesterified compound, which is adsorbed by a basic anion exchange resin.
CONSTITUTION: A high-purity phytol is obtained from an unsaponifiable material of a plant or alga. A raw phytol is reacted with a dibasic acid anhydride (e.g., maleic ankydride, phthalic anhydride) to give a hemiesterified compound, which is treated with a basic anion exchange resin so that the resin is adsorbed by the hemiesterified compound. The compound is then desorbed by an alkali and hydrolyzed to give the desired high-purity compound. The ion exchange resin of middle basicity is most suitable. An amount of the dibasic acid anhydride depends upon a hydroxyl number of the unsaponifiable material.
EFFECT: High purity and improved tint. High yield. Simple process and no complex device is required.
USE: Raw materials for cosmetics as well as medicines.
