Abstract
PURPOSE: To recover the settleability of activated sludge by raising the osmotic press. of liquor in an aeration tank to 5 atm or more to exterminate filamentous bacteria propagated in the sludge.
CONSTITUTION: By adding salts such as table salt or sodium sulfate to water treated with activated carbon whose settleability has been deteriorated by propagation of filamentous bacteria, the osmotic press. of the water is raised to 5 atm or more to exterminate the bacteria. When the amt. of the salts added is known, the osmotic press. is obtd. almost approximately (dissolvable org. constituents are neglected) according to the following van't Hoff's equation of osmotic press.: π=i.R.T.C (where π is osmotic press., i is the van't Hoff's factor, R is the gas constant, T is the absolute temp. and C is the solute mol no.). When the concn., etc. of the salts in the water are not clear, the amt. of the salts to be added can be adjusted with an osmometer so that the water becomes the predetermined osmotic press.
