Abstract

PURPOSE: To shorten the cooling time of foams produced from thermoplastic polymer particles thereby improve the production efficiency of the foams, by impregnating the thermoplastic polymer particles containing a blowing agent with a uncleating agent at a temperature higher than the softening point of the particles.
CONSTITUTION: A nucleating agent which is a nonionic surfactant, such as an ester of pentaerythritol, is added to thermoplastic polymer particles containing a blowing agent at a temperature higher than the softening point of the particles. The thermoplastic polymer particles are those of a polymer, such as polystyrene or a copolymer of styrene and other monomers, and are impregnated with a blowing agent, such as propane, butane or CH2Cl2, during or after polymerization of the polymer. For example, polystyrene particles are impregnated with 0.05W1.0wt%, based on the resin, of a nucleating agent at a temperature of 90W100°C. The foamable polymer particles thus produced have a cooling time shortened to half or below, as compared with polymer particles which do not contain the nucleating agent. Moreover, foams which do not expand or distort when released from molds can be obtained.
