Abstract

PURPOSE: To improve performance of a catalyst type exhaust-gas purifying apparatus for internal combustion engine, by disposing a compression-molded fabric of fine metal wire in the manner surrounding the catalyst, and thereby eliminating leakage of exhaust gas through the catalyst.
CONSTITUTION: In container 2, monolithic catalyst 1 carrying catalytic metal is disposed in a cylindrical form with some spacing 4 from the wall of container 2. In the space 4, there is proved a buffer member 40 of metal wire for protecting the catalyst. Opposite ends of catalyst 1 are retained tightly in place by retaining members 5b, 51b and 6b in which seal member 7 is placed. Further, at the opposite ends of space 4, there is provided respectively a seal member 8 consisting of a fabric of fine, heat-resisting metal wire and having a corrugated cross section, so as to seal exhaust gas passed through the space 4.
