Abstract

PURPOSE: To prepare the title compound in two steps, by reacting theobromine with 1,3-dibromopropane in a specific solvent in the presence of an alkali, and then reacting the product with acetylacetone in ethanol in the presence of an alkali carbonate and optionally KI.
CONSTITUTION: Theobromine is reacted with 1,3-dibromopropane in the presence of an alkali carbonate or an alkali hydroxide, in an organic solvent which is a poor solvent of alkali metal salts of theobromine, and the resulting 1-(3-bromopropyl)theobromine of formula II is made to react with acetylacetone in ethanol, in the presence of an alkali carbonate, and if necessary, potassium iodide (reaction accerelator), to obtain the objective compound I.
