Abstract

PURPOSE: Using a high-activity catalyst of organoantimony compound bearing at least one C-Sb linkage, the reaction of carbon dioxide and an epoxide is carried out under very mild conditions to produce readily various kinds of carbonates in one step in high yield.
CONSTITUTION: Carbon dioxide pressurized to about 50kg/cm2 at room temperature is made to react with an epoxide of formula I (R1 and R2 are H, alkyl, aryl or their derivative or they incorporate to form cyclic linkage) in the presence of a catalyst of organoantimony compound containing trivalent or pentavalent antimony atom of the formula: RnSbXm (R is alkyl, aryl; X is halogen, oxygen; m+n is 3 or 5) at a relatively low temperature such room temperature, thus producing a carbonate of formula II. The catalyst used is, e.g., Ph3SbBr2, Ph5Sb, Ph4SbBr, Me3SbBr2, Ph3SbO and especially pentavelent Sb catalysts show high activity over a wide range of epoxides.
