Abstract

PURPOSE: To form a thick hardening layer on the outer layer at a low temperature without producing distortion at an inner phase by a method wherein steel is heated in an atmosphere manufactured by adding a specified petroleum gas, an organic liquid, a neutral gas, etc. to ammonia, nitrogen is permeated, and the steel is quenched.
CONSTITUTION: Steel is heated in an atmosphere, which is manufactured by adding a petroleum gas such as propane, butane, etc. or the denatured endothermic gas or a gas or a liquid with cementation properties, which is an organic liquid such as alcohols, esters, ketones, etc., or one kind or more of a neutral gas such as nitrogen, argon, etc. to only ammonia gas or ammonia gas, within a range of 100°C or less from a A1 transformation point or less while controlling the supply of the ammonia gas. Thus, nitrogen is permeated on a surface of the steel, the outer layer is changed into austenite, and the inside is held as it remains as it is ferrite. The steel is quenched, an austenite layer is turned into martensite, and only the outer layer is hardened. Deformation is halted at a minimum because transformation is inhibited in the inside.
