Abstract

PURPOSE: To obtain the interference film of superior optical characteristics, aging and mechanical strength by using diamond-form carbon as high refractive index layers in the multilayer interference film composed of the layers of low refractive indices and the layers of high refractive indices.
CONSTITUTION: MgF2 is used as low refractive index (L) layers and diamond- form carbon as high refractive index (H) layers and these are alternately evaporated through sputtering on a transparent quartz plate. As an example, the interference film of 15 layers (Fig. a) shows the transmission spectrum such as the ones shown in Fig. b. The films are hard and their scratch resistance is better than that of the quartz plate. The spectral transmittance of the film produced by partly removing the substrate by ammonium fluoride hardly shows change. The film (Fig. c) made by the combination of SiO2, Al2O3, HfO2 and carbon on an ethylene glycol carbonate substrate shows a pencil hardness 5H and does not show any abnormality even when dipped for 3hr in warm water of 70°C.
