Abstract

PURPOSE: To obtain a stable copolymer emulsion having excellent adhesion suitable for paint, etc., by an aqueous emulsion polymerization of ethylenically unsaturated monomer in the presence of a copolymerizable emulsifier, such as derivatives of maleic acid, fumaric acid, or the like, having an alkali metal sulfonate group at the end of a molecular chain.
CONSTITUTION: In an aqueous emulsion polymerization of an ethylenically unsaturated monomer, such as styrene or vinyl chloride, an addition reaction product of a bisulfite either with a monoester or monoamide of an unsaturated dicarboxylic acid, such as maleic acid or fumaric acid, or with a dehydration reaction product between crotonic acid and diol or triol, which has one unsaturated radical remaining, is added to the polymerization system in a proportion of 0.01W5wt%, preferably 0.1W1wt%, based on of the ethylenically unsaturated monomer. Thus, a stable copolymer emulsion can be obtained.
