Abstract

PURPOSE: To produce resin particles having such a uniform and small particle size as to provide little jamming fluctuation, when fed to a molding machine hopper, by polymerizing a suspension obtained by suspending in an aqueous medium a solution of styrene/maleic anhydride copolymer resin in a vinyl aromatic monomer.
CONSTITUTION: A styrene/maleic anhydride copolymer resin (10W35pts.wt.) containing 15W30wt% of a maleic anhydride component and having an average polymerization degree of at least 500 is dissolved in 90W65pts.wt. of a vinyl aromatic monomer. The resulting solution, then, is suspended in an aqueous medium, and polymerized in the presence of a polymerization catalyst, yielding thermoplastic resin particles. The resin particles are made foamable by adding thereto a blowing agent during or after the polymerization reaction. When a styrene/maleic anhydride copolymer resin having an average polymerization degree of below 500 is used as the copolymer resin, the resin particles obtained can only give molded articles having low mechanical strength. The preferred upper limit of the polymerization degree is about 4000.
