Abstract

PURPOSE: To provide a pour point depressant for preventing the fluidity of oil from falling owing to the separation of paraffin from the oil, which depressant comprising an α-olefinsulfonate having a prescribed number of carbon atoms.
CONSTITUTION: A pour point depressant for oil is made of 20W30C α-olefinsulfonate. The desirable composition of α-olefin, which is used to manufacture the α- olefinsulfonate, is shown in the table. The α-olefin is sulfonated to produce the α- olefinsulfonate. The quantity of the pour point depressant to be added to the oil depends on the paraffin content of the oil. If 0.03% or more by weight of the depressant is normally added to the oil, the separation of paraffin is effectively suppressed and the fluidity of the oil is prevented from falling.
