Abstract

PURPOSE:To obtain a separator having excellent chemical stability, excellent mechanical properties, and low electric resistance by irradiating a radiation to a polymer film and then subjecting the polymer film to graft polymerization with acrylic acid or methacrylic acid aqueous solution. CONSTITUTION:A 20 micron-thick high-density polyethylene membrane is enclosed in a polyethylene bag in the atmosphere of nitrogen and then exposed to a radiation of 20Mrad under the irradiation condition of an acceleration of voltage of 2MeV and an acceleration current of 1mA, using a resonance transformer accelerator. Then, the membrane thus treated is brought into contact with a monomer aqueous solution in a glass ampoule, containing 50wt% acrylic acid and 0.25wt% a Mohl's salt and subjected to a deoxydization treatment in which nitrogen gas in bubbled to remove dessolved oxygen, and then held at 25 deg.C for 5hr at a reduced pressure of 10<-4>mmHg for reaction. Afterwards, the grafted membrane thus obtained is taken out of the glass ampoule, washed with water to remove unreacted monomer and homopolymer, dried, and then treated with a 2.5% caustic alkalie aqeuous solution at 90 deg.C for 120min to obtain a separator.
