Abstract

PURPOSE: To control air-fuel ratio of an internal combustion engine to keep it an optimal value, by starting operation of an O2 sensor when a predetermined level of supercharging pressure is detected by a pressure sensor disposed in the intake pipe, and effecting control to obtain an optimal air-fuel ratio most suited for the operational condition of engine.
CONSTITUTION: When a turbocharger disposed coaxially with compressor 7 and turbine 18 is set into operation under an operational condition of engine that the throttle valve is almost fully opened and the engine speed is higher than, for instance, 3000rpm, the fact that the turbocharger has started its operation is detected by pressure sensor 24 disposed in intake pipe 12 and O2 sensor 20 disposed in exhaust pipe 19 is set into operation. Output voltage of the O2 sensor 20 is compared with a reference voltage in comparator C. In case that the sensor output is higher than the reference voltage when temperature sensor 23 at the inlet of turbine is kept ON, proportional solenoid 43 is energized according to the difference of the two voltages. By thus increasing the air-flow rate, air-fuel ratio can be controlled to be kept constant.
