Abstract

PURPOSE: To remove a trace amount of acetic acid from acetic acid ester adsorbed and collected from exhaust gas with activated charcoal, to enable the reuse of the recovered acetic acid ester as a neutral solvent, and to prevent environmental pollution, by the use of calcium carbonate as an acid scavenger.
CONSTITUTION: In the recovery of acetic ester from exhaust gas by adsorption with activated charcoal, the acetic acid ester is hydrolyzed to acetic acid and an alcohol on the surface of the activated charcoal by the slight catalytic activity of the charcoal, and the hydrolyzed products are dissolved in the recovered acetic acid ester (e.g. ethyl acetate). The acetic acid can be removed by treating the ester with calcium carbonate. The calcium carbonate column is pref. a vertical and upflow- type to prevent the uniformization and compaction of the calcium carbonate.
EFFECT: Simple and safe operation.
