Abstract

PURPOSE: To detect the cracking of a pipe coated with a heat insulator fitted with a metal cover and detect the progress in the cracking, by providing a capillary part in the heat insulator and installing an appropriate detector at the capillary part.
CONSTITUTION: The pipe 1 is coated with the heat insulator 2 fitted with the metal cover 3. A plurality of pipe cracking detecting portions 4aW4c are provided in the heat insulator 2. Each detecting portion consists of the capillary part 5 made by winding such a material of high capillary effect as absorbent cotton, wick, etc. and a detector 6 made of a humidity-sensitive element or a thermosensitive element. Metal sheets 8a, 8b having numerous holes 7 are provided on the inside and outside of the capillary part 5. When steam gushing through the crack of the pipe 1 reaches the detecting portions 4a 4b sequentially, the humidity or temperature of the steam is sequentially detected by the detector 6. Thereby, the cracking and the progress therein are detected.
