Abstract

PURPOSE: To obtain a double carbide which is a hard metal whose WC moiety is replaced by MoC, by adding a necessary amt. of C to finely mixed Mo and W oxides; pelletizing them; and removing oxygen by reaction in an inert atmosphere, followed by secondary heating in a reducing atmosphere.
CONSTITUTION: Mo and W oxides are coprecipitated from an ammonium soln. of Mo and W, roasted, and uniformly mixed to below 0.2 μ. C is added to the mixed powder in an amt. required to perform reduction and carbide formation, and they are pelletized and subjected to rapid reduction in an inert atmosphere at a high temp. about 800°C with stirring. The resulting primary carbide is then reheated at above 1300°C in an atmosphere of H2 to obtain a solid soln. of double carbide based on (Mo.W)C, dissolved carbide of Mo and W, and contg. a cpd. of Mo(C,N, O).
