Abstract

PURPOSE: To polymerize a vinyl monomer without causing the polymer scale build- up of, by drying an aqueous solution of a specific salt of an organic acid and a mono hydric alcohol applied to the inner face of a polymerizer, etc.,

CONSTITUTION: Preferably a 0.01W5 wt.% aqueous solution of an alkali metal or an ammonium salt of an organic sulfonic or an organic carboxylic acid having a conjugated doulbe bond, e.g., benzoic acid, etc., is prepared. The aqneous solution thus obtained is mixed with preferably 1W20 wt.% of a 3WC mono hydric alcohol, e.g., propyl alcohol, and, if nessary, an aqueous silicic acid, e.g., orthosilicic acid, etc. in an amount of preferably not more than one equivalent based on the salt component of the above-mentioned acid. The pH of the resulting solution is adjusted to not more than 7 to give a coating liquid, which is applied to parts to be in contact with a vinyl monomer, dried and washed with water to polymerize the monomer, e.g., vinyl chloride, etc.

EFFECT: Coating on a stainless steel or a glass lined polymerizer is effective in preventing scale build-up of suspension or emulsion polymerization.
