Abstract

PURPOSE: To obtain the title compound usable as a raw material for pesticides and polyesters, a hardener for epoxy resins, etc., by isomerizing 1, 2, 3, 6-tetrahydrophthalic anhydride in the presence of a palladium catalyst and a basic compound.
CONSTITUTION: 1, 2, 3, 6- Tetrahydrophthalic anhydride is isomerized in the presence of (a) a palladium catalyst consisting of 0.1W10%, preferably 1W5% of palladium on a carrier, e.g. alumina, carbon, silica abhestos etc. and (b) a small amount of a compound selected from a hydroxide of an alkali (earth) metal, ammonia compound, a salt of a weak acid with a strong base, an organic amine, etc. in an atmosphere of nitrogen at 130W230°C, preferably 150W200°C for 3W12 hr to give the desired compound with little by-product formation.
