Abstract

PURPOSE:To enhance the corrosion resistance of a corrosion resistance protector made of stainless steel or the like by irradiating the protector surface with laser beam. CONSTITUTION:The protective tube of a thermocouple which comes in contact with fused sodium in a fast breeder is made of stainless steel. The surface of the stainless steel tube is irradiated with laser beam to enhance the corrosion resistance to sodium as well as to make the surface amorphous and harden it. The protective tubes of a sheath heater and a thermocouple used to fused aluminum are convered with Mo by spraying to avoil alloying with aluminum. It sometimes happens that pinholes are formed in the sprayed Mo layer, so the layer is irradiated with laser beam to convert the layer into uniform one with no pinhole, thereby enhancing the corrosion resistance to aluminum.
