Abstract

PURPOSE: To recover and reuse hydroquinone added as a polymerization inhibitor in a process for the preparation of acrylic acid by the catalytic gasphase oxidation of propylene or acrolein, in high efficiency, by evaporating the bottom of a fracftionation column to dryness, and extracting the residue with water.
CONSTITUTION: A mixture containing acrylic acid prepared by the catalytic gas- phase oxidation of propylene or acrolein, is distilled in an acrylic acid fractionation column 2, and the distilled acrylic acid is collected in a tank 4. The bottom liquid of the fractionation column 2 composed of acrylic acid containing concentrated hydroquinone which is added as a polymerization inhibiter and other high-boiling products such as polymers, is introduced into an evaporator 7. After evaporating 60- 90 wt% of the liquid supplied to the evaporator 7, the composition of the residue thus obtained is adjusted to 5-25wt% of acrylic acid, 25-40% of its dimer, 10-25 wt% of hydroquinone, and 40-50wt% of polymers and other high-boiling components (esp. the sum of the acrylic acid and its dimer is less than 50wt%), and extracted with 1-10 times of water in an extractor 15. The objective component is recovered through the line 17, and reused
