Abstract

PURPOSE: To make possible measurement of head abrasion loss automatically by opening air holes in the portions near the read and write gaps of the magnetic head where traveling medium does not contact and supplying pressure or vacuum pressure therethrough.
CONSTITUTION: A read gap 2, a write gap 3 and air holes 4 near the gaps are provided to the magnetic head body 1, and further a pressure source or vacuum sorce 6, a pressure detector 5, pressure detection signal 7 and a changeover vlave 8 are provided to the magnetic tape apparatus. Hence, when the contact portions wear down, the spacing between the air holes 4 and running medium become increasingly narrow and the back pressure being exerted to the air holes changes. The change thereof is detected with detector 5 and the detection signal 7 is sent out. From this signal, displaying of the abrasion loss and the accurate judgement of exchange time by abrasion may be performed
