Abstract

PURPOSE: Yttrium is incorporated into one or both wires of copper-and iron-base thermocouple wires to improve oxygen-and nitrogen-resistivity in oxydizing-and nitriding-atmospheres.
CONSTITUTION: A relatively inexpensive thermocouple consisting of copper or copper alloy coupled with constantan or alternatively iron or iron alloy coupled with constantan is used. One or both wires of either thermocouple are provided with 0.3 to 1.5% of Y, which reduces oxidation or nitriding of wires when used in oxydizing or nitriding atmosphere, thus improving useful wire life.
