Abstract
PURPOSE: To obtain the titled compound useful as an industrial material in high yield and with high selectivity by the reaction of methacrylamide with an alcohol in the presence of a specific catalyst without formation of polymers, while removing produced NH3 from the reaction system.
CONSTITUTION: A methacrylate is obtained by the reaction of methacrylamide with a primary alcohol, e.g. methanol, at 50W300°C under a pressure of 5W100 kg/cm2 in the presence of a small amount of water and at least one type of catalyst selected from a Zn bromide, a Zn nitrate, a Zn sulfate, a Zn borate, a Zn phosphate, and a Zn iodede, a Zn carboxylate, while removing formed NH3 from the reaction system intermittently or continuously.
EFFECT: No need to use conc. H2SO4 as ever, and no problems of the material of the reaction equipment and by-product formation of a great amount of ammosulfate.
