Abstract
PURPOSE: To lower the drive voltage and to prevent the dispersing effect from being stored after a voltage application is interrupted by adding a vertically orienting agent to the liquid crystal of a display device using the guest-host effects of White- and-Tayler type.
CONSTITUTION: A liquid crystal 7, to which a dichroic pigment and a vertically orienting agent are added, is held between the supporting plates 1 and 2 which have electrodes 3 and 4 and vertical orientation treating layers 5 and 6. Under the non-electrytic condition, the liquid crystal 7 is substantially vertically oriented on the plates 1 and 2 and a wall layer 10 in the vicinity of the former. At the center 11 of the cell, however, the crystal 7 is arranged to have its helical axis 8 vertically so that it is brought wholly into the such a condition G* as is transparent but is deformed. As a voltage is applied, the crystal 7 is brought from the condition G* through the opaque focal conic condition having the axis 8 turned to the homeotropic condition under which the helical construction is eliminated.
