Abstract

PURPOSE: To prepare the title compound with high selectivity efficiently, by oxidizing toluene or its nuclear substitution product in the presence of a selective catalyst consisting essentially of palladium, antimony, and phosphorus oxide.
CONSTITUTION: Toluene or its nuclear substitution product, e.g. xylene, is reacted with oxygen in the presence of a catalyst consisting essentially of palladium, antimony, and phosphorus oxide (P) to give an aromatic aldehyde. The catalyst preferably contains further an alkali metal sulfate and/or an alkali metal fluoride. The atomic ratio of palladium to antimony is 0.5W8:1, and the content of P is 1W30 wt.% based on the carrier weight. The alkali metal is used in an amount of 1W20 moles per gram-atom of palladium for the sulfate, and 0.5W1.25 moles for the fluoride.
