Abstract

PURPOSE: To obtain polyvinyl alcohol (P) scarcely showing solubility in warm water at room temperature to 50°C and crosslinking with boric acic and borax, by heat- treating P powder dispersed in a specific medium.
CONSTITUTION: Polyvinyl alcohol powder (P) having a saponification degree ≥ 95 mole %, preferably 97W100 mole %, is disperased in a medium having a boiling point ≥70°C of (A) a polyhydric alcohol, e.g. an alkylene glycol or glycerol, or a mixture of (A) and (B) a non-solvent, e.g. methanol or n-butanol, for P at a weight ratio of (A) to (B) of 90:10W10:90 to give a solid concentration of 10W 30wt.%. The dispersion thus obtained is heat-treated at 70W160°C for 30 minW 2 hr.
