The alternating driving pulses are applied to the driving coil 1 to generate an alternating magnetic field to apply a driving force to the rotor 2. A detection circuit 11 detects an induced voltage due to the rotation of the rotor 2. A control circuit 16 receives the output of the detection circuit 11 to decide which of a step driving wave form of long pulse width and a continuous driving wave form of short pulse width the driving pulse should have. As a result, the motor can be self-started in the prescribed direction and the consumed power is reduced.
