Abstract

PURPOSE:To prevent the action of a glow starter when a discharge lamp is turned on to emit adjusted light, by connecting a parallel circuit consisting of the glow starter and an impedance element in series with a voltage-switched semiconductor element across the non-power sides of filaments of the lamp. CONSTITUTION:When a control circuit 5 is energized by an AC power source 1 and a bidirectional switching element 2 is turned on at a predetermined phase, a voltage is applied to an SSS 8 through an impedance element through the glow starter 6 is open. As a result, the SSS is turned on. Discharge is then caused in the glow starter 6 to preheat the discharge lamp 4. When the glow starter 6 is opened again, the discharge lamp 4 is lighted on. At that time, the voltage of the lamp 4 falls and the terminal voltage of the SSS 8 becomes lower than the break-over voltage. This results in turning off the SSS 8. If the break-over voltage of the SSS 8 is set higher than the discharge start voltage of the glow starter 6, the SSS is not turned on until just before the reclosing voltage of the discharge lamp reaches the break-over voltage of the SSS 8.
