Abstract
PURPOSE:To reduce considerably an average power consumption by providing a circuit, which discriminates whether lighting data is present or not, in a driving circuit and stopping the application of an auxiliary charge voltage in case that no lighting picture element exists in the scanning line. CONSTITUTION:Orthogonal data-side electrodes X1 to Xm and scanning-side electrodes Y1 to Yn are arranged in parallel respectively, and the intersection of them corresponds to one picture element of thin film EL display device 10. An auxiliary charge voltage is applied to these picture elements from auxiliary charge power source circuits 20 and 110 through diode arrays 30, 60 and 70. Switching element circuits 40 and 50 consisting of MOSFETs discharge the charged charge of write non-selection picture element points and apply the write voltage to selection picture element points, and write driving is performed by write voltage circuits 80 and 90. Lighting data discrimination circuit 120 receives data of character generator 123 through parallel-series converter 124 and does not send auxiliary charge signals to circuit 20 in case that lighting picture elements do not exist at all in the selection scanning line, so that the auxiliary charge voltage is not applied to common bus A of diode array 30.
